The River Dart Valley inside the Dartmoor National Park encompasses a beautiful and picturesque combination of high moorland and deeply gorged mature English Woodland. Cutting through this dramatic scenery is the magical River Dart; a reputable source of some of the UK’s best Salmon & Sea Trout fishing from Apr – Sept.
The famous Country House Hotel on the banks of the River Dart is Holne Chase; a former 11th Century Hunting seat to the nearby Buckfast Abbey. Here the hotel boasts 7 of the finest pools on the River on it’s 2 mile beat.

* Fishing out of season on nearby lakes & reservoirs Fishing on the Hotel water is limited to two rods at any one time. Therefore, whether you intend to fish alone or with a gillie, we will need approximate times and days in advance to avoid any double bookings. |
In addition to our Hotel water, we can arrange fishing on a further 9 miles courtesy of the Dart Anglers Association. Their water extends below ours downstream to and including the famous Weir Pool at Totnes. For this you are required to book a gillie.
Fishing on a variety of nearby lakes and reservoirs for Rainbow Trout is available, almost all year round.
It is advisable to obtain an NRA License prior to your visit. This is available from any post office from £3.25 for 1 day; £8.50 for 8 days or £24.00 for a Season.
We offer guests a ‘gillie’ service for £40.00 per rod, per half day or £80.00 for a full day and from £55.00 for night fishing. With night fishing for Sea Trout we insist guests book a gillie, for their own safety as much as anything else. Gillie service without tuition is £65.00.
You will find a large supply of hand tied flies available to purchase at the hotel.
Rods are available to hire but must be booked in advance.
Fishing courses are available throughout the season, from beginners level, please ask for written details.
The Environment Agency have introduced a voluntary ‘Catch & Release” Program to protect the Spring Salmon on the Dart. We would like to request that guests fishing on Hotel water comply with this initiative at least until 1st June.
If you are going to be night fishing please make sure that if you are with a partner or someone else that they know when you are expected back and that instructions are in place to raise alarm should an accident occur.
We can also provide refrigeration for your catch as long as you’ve gutted it beforehand!
